Waltham "Appleton Tracy", 1879
A birthday gift from my father. Sterling case, 15 jewel movement. The dial is signed "A.W.Co, Waltham" (American Watch Company), and the movement is signed "Appleton Tracy Co." Appleton Tracy and American Watch Company were early incarnations of the entity that was eventually to be known as Waltham Watch Company. At the time of the production of this piece (1879), Appleton Tracy had been merged into American Watch Company for 20 years, so I'm unsure why the older name would still appear on the movement, but I've seen plenty of other examples exhibiting the same phenomenon.
I'm always fascinated by the full-plate movements of this era where the only exposed portion is the balance. The tend to have some pretty interesting regulators, too, and this one is no exception.
