Junghans Minivox, ca. 1952
The Junghans J89 contained herein is a neat movement. From the beginning, the designer of the movement, Albert Letsche, set off to separate the functions of the alarm from those of the rest of the movement, to make operation more intuitive for the user. The crown at 3 handles the time-setting and winding, like most watches. The crown at 2 sets the alarm time, and the button at 4 switches the alarm on and off - a nicely straightforward arrangement.
The J89 is far more commonly found under Bulova livery, usually in a gold-filled or occasionally 14K case with fancy lugs. Mine was produced instead under Junghans' own name, with a chromed case and black dial. I've also occasionally seen them produced private-label for Abercrombie & Fitch, with cosmetics similar to this one. The Junghans models have 20 jewels, the others 17.
These were produced from 1951 to 1958. The gold-plated movement, dual tracks around the outside of the dial (one for the minutes and seconds and another for the alarm hand, a very handy arrangement), and dial wording ("20 jewels" instead of "Minivox") date this example to the earlier part of that span.
